CCTV Cameras Set To Bolster Efforts Against Homosexuality And Lesbianism In Tanzania’s Single-Gender Boarding Schools

The Tanzanian Government is considering adopting the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at its same-sex primary and secondary boarding school dormitories to monitor young scholars and prevent them from developing morally harmful habits, particularly homosexuality and lesbianism.

The helpful plan was unveiled by Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba while responding to questions filed by different parliamentarians during a morning session of direct questions to the Prime Minister.

During the session, Mr Thomas Maganga Kampala, a lawmaker from Katavi Constituency, observed that Tanzania was currently facing a serious spate of moral decay, driven by negative changes in traditions, parenting and social systems.

As a result, he noted, pupils in public same-sex boarding schools were being subjected to homosexuality and lesbianism.

To that end, Mr Kampala challenged the Government to mull over dropping the same-sex boarding school system.

In his response, the Premier said the Government was fully aware of the persistence of serious societal changes, calling for the intervention of the whole community while the Government continues to implement useful strategies.

“This matter touches every family dwelling under the sky of Tanzania, thus it shouldn’t be left to the Government alone. It negates and erodes the sensitivity of our youth, putting the country’s future into a dark destiny,” he said.

Dr Nchemba cited some measures that the Government has already put in place, including the establishment of special gender and parenting desks at schools, whereby teachers are empowered and sensitized to keep a close watch on students.

Moreover, he said the Government would consult with the Attorney General on the possibility of installing CCTV cameras at all same-sex school students’ dormitories.
