International tourists visiting Tanzania will now have a prestigious opportunity to play golf while enjoying the country’s rare wildlife and spectacular natural attractions.
Tanzania has officially launched an ultramodern golf course worth 8.5bn/- at the heart of one of the country’s most prominent and popular tourism destinations, Serengeti National Park.
The golf course, located at Fort Ikoma on the outskirts of the vast national park, marks a significant milestone in Tanzania’s efforts to expand its sports tourism sector.
The establishment of the maiden sports facility, dubbed the “Serengeti National Park Golf Course”, reflects the country’s ongoing efforts to diversify tourism products and enhance the performance of the tourism sector.
The golf facility covers an area of 450 acres and features 18 holes, with a total par of 72.
It measures 7.097 kilometres, equivalent to approximately 7,761.4 yards, and has been designed to challenge players through winding fairways, varying wind conditions and different obstacles.
Speaking on Sunday, October 18, 2026, during the official launch ceremony in Serengeti, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, said the development aims to attract more international visitors to the country.
She called on the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) to work closely with Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), the Tanzania Golf Association and other key private-sector stakeholders to promote the newly introduced tourism product.
“Make sure you include this golf course in Tanzania’s tourism attraction advertising packages,” she instructed.
Dr Kijaji expressed optimism that, with sufficient international visibility, the golf course would help attract tourists from different destinations across the world.
She commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership in facilitating the completion of the sports tourism attraction and urged authorities responsible for other national parks across the country to consider introducing similar facilities.
The golf course, developed by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), brings the total number of golf courses in Tanzania to 12.
As part of the activities preceding the official launch of the facility, at least 81 experienced golfers from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Malawi competed in a specially organised tournament at the new venue.
The tournament aims to promote golf and market Serengeti as a destination that combines sports and nature-based tourism.
TANAPA Conservation Commissioner Massana Mwishawa said the project was officially launched on December 29, 2022, by the TANAPA Board of Trustees, which was then chaired by retired General George Waitara, a former Chief of Defence Forces.
He said the investment reflects TANAPA’s commitment to developing innovative tourism products that complement wildlife experiences, encourage visitors to extend their stays and increase the economic value of Tanzania’s natural attractions.
“The project is specifically intended to enable visitors to Serengeti National Park to engage in additional tourism activities during their visits, giving them an opportunity to play golf while relaxing and enjoying sports tourism,” he said.
Mwishawa said the golf course is located at Fort Ikoma, on the outskirts of Serengeti National Park, and was developed to provide tourists visiting the area with additional recreational activities, including golf, during their leisure time.
He said construction of the facility had been completed 100 per cent, with the investment aimed at adding value to Tanzania’s tourism attractions and strengthening the country’s competitiveness in the international luxury tourism market.
He added that the golf course is expected to broaden the range of activities available to visitors, encourage longer stays in the area and increase revenue generated from tourism.
“The presence of this golf course is intended to increase the length of tourists’ stays in the park and neighbouring areas, a development expected to increase tourism revenue and stimulate national economic growth,” he said.
He clarified that the golf course is situated on the outskirts of Serengeti National Park and was developed to expand recreational services for tourists while attracting golfers from different countries.
