In efforts to attain its ambitious goal of hosting a total of 1.5 million visitors by 2030, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar is now contemplating establishing its own airline company.
On Sunday, September 6, 2026, EgyptAir made its debut direct flight from Cairo International Airport to Zanzibar, marking the launch of the airline’s new route and strengthening connectivity between Egypt and one of East Africa’s most prominent tourist destinations.
Following the launch of the crucial flight route, the Minister for Infrastructure, Communication and Transport of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Dr Khalid Salum Mohamed (MP), said Zanzibar was considering establishing a state-owned airline.
He noted that the envisaged development was aimed at further boosting the tourism sector on the island, possibly by attracting more visitors.
“We have launched vital talks pertaining to this ambitious plan, and we remain optimistic that the development will finally bear fruitful results,” he said.
Commenting on the launch, Mr Ahmed Adel, Chairman of EgyptAir Holding Company, said that, in line with the state’s directives and its commitment to strengthening cooperation with African countries, EgyptAir had developed ambitious plans to expand its network and reach new destinations in strategically important locations across Africa.
He said EgyptAir would now operate two weekly flights to Zanzibar, on Fridays and Sundays, using its newest Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft.
The new service will provide regular air connectivity between Egypt and Zanzibar, while supporting increased travel, tourism and economic ties between the two destinations.
Passengers can book EgyptAir flights between Cairo and Zanzibar through the airline’s official website, Egyptair.com, EgyptAir offices worldwide and authorised travel agents.
Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi announced a primary target to increase annual tourist arrivals from 800,000 to 1.5 million visitors by 2030.
Recent reports also highlight a broader milestone-driven goal of welcoming more than one million visitors ahead of that final deadline.
