The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) is exploring the possibility of extending dry port operations to areas within Dar es Salaam’s Temeke Municipal Council as part of efforts to strengthen transportation and trade-related infrastructure.
The plan is in line with TASAC’s mandate to regulate the establishment and operation of dry ports in Tanzania and support the development of an efficient maritime and transport sector.
To advance the plan, the state-owned corporation responsible for regulating, managing and promoting the maritime and water transport sector convened a tailor-made roundtable meeting with the Mayor and lawmakers from Temeke Municipality to discuss plans to allocate areas for various activities, including dry port operations, within the municipality.
The meeting also brought together the Municipal Director and other members of the Temeke Municipal Council leadership.
The Temeke Municipal delegation was led by Municipal Mayor, Hon. Uzairu Athumani, alongside Municipal Director Mr Jomaary Satura. The delegation was received by TASAC Director General, Mr Mohamed Salum, at TASAC offices in Dar es Salaam.
TASAC coordinated the meeting to build a common understanding among key stakeholders and lay a strong foundation for cooperation in implementing the proposed plan.
The meeting provided an important platform for participants to discuss the proposed areas, implementation arrangements and the importance of involving residents living in areas identified for the project.
The wards covered by the plan include Azimio, Buza, Sandari, Kilakala, Mtoni, Makangarawe, Temeke, Miburani and Yombo Vituka, together with specific areas within those wards.
Tandika, Chang’ombe and Kurasini were not included in the plan because they have already been designated for other strategic purposes. Tandika serves as a commercial hub, Chang’ombe is an industrial area, while Kurasini is designated for port-related activities.
The plan takes into consideration the availability of road infrastructure, the TAZARA railway, parking areas and other economic activities associated with transportation and trade.
During the first phase, Keko, Sandari, Kilakala, Mtoni and Azimio have been identified among the areas earmarked for development.
The meeting also discussed arrangements for introducing a cost-recovery charge to cover damage to infrastructure caused by port-related activities.
The proposed development forms part of ongoing efforts by TASAC and Temeke Municipal Council to build a common understanding among stakeholders and establish a strong foundation for cooperation in implementing the plan.
