Tanzania To Temporarily Close Key Northeastern Road In Tanga Region For Bridge Repairs
If you are planning to travel to Tanga Region via the Tanga–Segera Road, stay tuned for updates on the planned temporary road closure and alternative routes.
The Tanga–Segera Road is a vital regional and national transport link in northeastern Tanzania, connecting the coastal city of Tanga to the major highway junction at Segera in Tanga Region.
The Hale and Maguzoni bridges are scheduled for major repairs, prompting a temporary closure of the road from 8 a.m. to noon.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid unnecessary delays and inconvenience.
Tanga Regional Commissioner (RC), Ambassador Dr Batilda Salha Burian, has urged road users to plan their journeys in advance following the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) plan to temporarily close the road to facilitate repairs to the Hale and Maguzoni bridges.

The RC explained that the road would be closed from 8 a.m. to noon, urging travellers, traders and transporters to take the scheduled closure into account to minimise potential disruptions.
She said the measure was intended to give the contractor sufficient time and space to carry out the bridge repairs efficiently and within the scheduled timeframe.
She noted that the Tanga–Segera Road was economically important because it connects various areas and serves vehicles transporting passengers and goods. She therefore stressed the need for road users to cooperate with the authorities overseeing the repair works.
“We urge road users to plan their journeys in advance and observe the road closure schedule. Those planning to travel should consider starting their journeys from noon onwards to minimise disruptions,” she said.
She said government recognises the road’s importance to economic and social activities, but repairing the bridges was essential to ensuring the safety of road users and the durability of the infrastructure.
She also urged residents to observe precautionary measures issued by the relevant authorities, particularly amid reports of the possibility of El Niño rains, stressing the importance of preparedness and protecting infrastructure.
Meanwhile, TANROADS Tanga Regional Manager, Engineer Msama Msama, said light vehicles could use an alternative route from Tanga through Maguzoni, proceeding to Mnyuzi and Rwengera before continuing towards Korogwe.
He advised heavy vehicles to wait until the repair works were completed and the road reopened to traffic to avoid potential challenges during the implementation of the project.
“We will ensure that the contractor receives all the necessary materials on time and carries out the work efficiently in accordance with the project’s requirements,” Engineer Msama said.
Tanga Regional Police Commander Almachius Mchunguzi said traffic police officers would be deployed at roadblocks on the Segera and Maguzoni sides to alert motorists and guide road users.
He said the officers would ensure that drivers received accurate information about road conditions and complied with instructions issued during the repair period.
Commander Mchunguzi emphasised that drivers must follow police instructions and road signs to prevent accidents and traffic congestion. He urged all road users to exercise caution throughout the repair period.
