Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign Empowers Rufiji Residents With Knowledge Of Their Rights

RESIDENTS of Mupi Ward in Rufiji District, Coast Region, have commended the Government for bringing the second phase of the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign to their area, saying it has equipped them with vital knowledge about their rights and how to address various challenges through legal channels.

They said the campaign had provided them with important education on gender-based violence, land disputes and ways of preventing conflicts by complying with the law, adding that the knowledge would help them address such challenges through the appropriate legal procedures.

The residents made the remarks on November 5, 2026, during the campaign held in Mupi Ward, where they welcomed the opportunity to access legal education and advice within their communities.

Khadija Kisinda said the campaign had helped her understand the different forms of gender-based violence, many of which she had previously not been aware of.

“We have received valuable guidance, particularly on gender-based violence. We did not know how many forms of gender-based violence there are. We are therefore very grateful for this campaign because it has reached us in our own ward,” she said.

Another resident, Shaibu Amani, from Mgomba Kati Village, said the campaign had come at the right time, urging more people to turn up for legal aid services to gain knowledge that would help them deal with various challenges.

He said public participation was important in ensuring that residents understood their rights and knew the appropriate legal procedures for addressing their grievances.

Meanwhile, Rufiji Town Council Legal Officer, Lightness Mgala, said the second phase of the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign had started providing various legal services across Rufiji District.

She said the services included legal advice on land matters, gender-based violence and inheritance issues, as well as legal education for Ward Tribunals to strengthen their capacity to effectively handle and resolve residents’ complaints.

Mgala added that the campaign was an important opportunity for residents to access legal guidance, understand their rights and improve access to justice within their communities.
