Barrick Appoints Sebastiaan Bock as CEO, Rest of World

Bock will lead Barrick’s portfolio outside North America and report to Barrick President and CEO Mark Hill

TORONTO: Barrick Mining Corporation (NYSE:B; TSX:ABX) has announced the appointment of Sebastiaan Bock as Chief Executive Officer, Rest of World, effective immediately.

In his new role, Bock will oversee Barrick’s gold and copper operations and projects outside North America and report to Mark Hill, President and Chief Executive Officer of Barrick.

Barrick’s Rest of World portfolio includes gold and copper assets across Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. The portfolio produces more than two million gold equivalent ounces annually and is expected to grow by more than 20 per cent over the next three years.

Barrick Chairman John Thornton said the company’s Rest of World portfolio has a distinct advantage through its ability to work with Chinese partners, including joint mine ownership and co-investment.

According to Thornton, such partnerships can enable greater efficiency, broader access to advanced technologies, including those transforming exploration, operations, processing and information management, as well as access to leading equipment suppliers and comprehensive supply-chain solutions.

He added that the partnerships could also create opportunities for shared infrastructure, resources and solutions, helping to reduce risks and improve outcomes.

Barrick President and CEO Mark Hill said Bock’s experience and achievements make him well suited to build on the company’s unique advantage across its Rest of World portfolio.

“Seb’s experiences and accomplishments are tailor-made for Barrick to build on this unique advantage,” said Hill.

He noted that Bock has experience spanning operations, finance, strategic planning, geopolitical issues, human resources and risk management, describing him as the ideal person to grow Barrick’s Rest of World business.

“I am excited to accept this new role quite simply because what Barrick does, matters,” said Bock.

“It matters to the thousands of employees and stakeholders I’ve been honoured to work with over the years. It matters to the communities where we work to create lasting and shared benefits. It matters to our investors whose wellbeing is affected by how well our work is done. These partnerships will allow us to realise the benefits of our unique Rest of World strengths,” he added.

Bock joined Barrick in January 2019 as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Africa and the Middle East before being appointed Chief Operating Officer for the region in July 2022.

Under his leadership, the region has met or exceeded its production guidance every year and achieved significant growth.

Among his key achievements are leading the Lumwana expansion, helping resolve the situation in Mali, achieving record throughput at Kibali, and growing gold reserves at Loulo-Gounkoto and Bulyanhulu.
