The Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) has given seed producers, distributors and traders 30 days to formalise the use of its proprietary seeds and technologies or face legal action.
In a public notice published in the Government Gazette No. 18012 on October 9, 2026, TARI directed all companies, institutions and individuals involved in producing, distributing or selling its seeds and technologies to comply with intellectual property requirements.
The institute requires stakeholders to register, verify and update their information, sign formal licensing agreements and establish proper royalty payment arrangements in accordance with the law.
TARI said the requirements are backed by Sections 30 and 40 of the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act and Regulation 33(b) of the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute Regulations, 2023.
The institute has urged all affected stakeholders to contact its Director General within the 30-day period, warning that legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply.
Applications and related correspondence should be submitted to the Director General, TARI, P.O. Box 1571, Dodoma, Tanzania, or through email at [email protected]. Further information is available via telephone on 0733 543 194.
The notice aims to strengthen compliance with intellectual property laws and ensure that the use of TARI-developed seeds and technologies is properly licensed and royalties are paid as required by law.
