Motorsport Takes Centre Stage In Tanzania’s Forest Conservation Drive

Tanzania, a country endowed with abundant forest reserves and tree plantations, is continuing to implement a series of interventions with an eye to conserving its forest cover and protecting the environment.

These initiatives entail attracting a wide range of stakeholders from various sectors to take an active role in conservation efforts.

This drive is being championed in the East African country by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, in cooperation with its relevant institutions, chiefly the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS).

As a result of the ongoing strategy, stakeholders in Tanzania’s motorsport sector have chipped in to advance the government’s conservation agenda.

This time, the Serengeti Rally of Tanzania 2026 has been organised at the heart of the Morogoro Tree Plantation, highlighting stakeholders’ commitment to supporting the government’s push for environmental and forest conservation.

The breathtaking event attracted a number of dignitaries, including the Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Mr Paul Makonda, who expressed his delight at the development.

He said sporting events can serve as an effective platform for educating the public on the importance of conserving forests and the environment.

He observed that hosting sporting competitions in forest environments provides an opportunity for members of the public to learn practically about the value of forests and the need to protect them.

“It is a matter of learning through seeing. When you learn through practical experience, you have a greater opportunity to understand,” Makonda said.

He noted that forests play an important role in supporting people’s livelihoods, including contributing to rainfall and providing a healthy environment in which communities can live.

He therefore urged Tanzanians to continue benefiting from forest resources while ensuring that they are protected from degradation.

Makonda further called on Tanzanians to become custodians of forests by recognising their value and actively participating in their protection, stressing that the benefits derived from forests can continue to be enjoyed by both present and future generations if the resources are properly managed.

He expressed his impression with the preparations for the Serengeti Rally of Tanzania 2026 and the manner in which the competition was being conducted within the Morogoro Tree Plantation.

According to him, linking sports with conservation can help increase public awareness of environmental protection while simultaneously promoting sports and tourism.

The minister also managed to visit the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency pavilion, where he received information on conservation activities being undertaken by the agency.

For her part, TFS Tourism Officer Salome Kivuyo said the agency was continuing to work with stakeholders and development partners to promote sporting activities in forest areas while observing conservation regulations.

She said such activities include cycling, motorcycling and marathon events, with the aim of creating a stronger link between sports and environmental conservation.

“We welcome various stakeholders to come and work with us in bringing sporting activities into our forests, so that Tanzanians can have an opportunity to enjoy these sports while also learning, recognising and appreciating the value of forests and the importance of protecting them,” Kivuyo said.

The ongoing Serengeti Rally of Tanzania 2026, being held at the Morogoro Tree Plantation under the management of TFS, has provided an opportunity to combine sports, conservation, tourism and environmental education.

Through its presence at the rally, TFS is using the event to engage members of the public and other stakeholders on conservation issues, while demonstrating how forest areas can support social, economic and tourism activities when utilised in accordance with conservation regulations.

The initiative underscores the potential of sporting events to go beyond entertainment and competition by creating practical platforms through which communities can experience the value of natural resources and understand the importance of protecting them.
