Tanzania is continuing to work on key preparedness measures to start using nuclear power to boost the country’s electricity generation capacity.
If all goes well, the country is expecting to integrate nuclear technology and generate nuclear electricity within the next seven years.
As part of the preliminary preparations ahead of adopting the vital technology, Tanzania participated in the inaugural Ministerial Meeting for the launch of the Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) programme.
The vital forum, which targets promoting the safe, secure and sustainable use of nuclear technologies in maritime activities, was held for two consecutive days, August 26 and 27, in Washington, D.C.
The ATLAS programme is a new initiative of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aimed at promoting the safe, secure and sustainable use of nuclear technologies in maritime activities, including nuclear-powered vessels and floating nuclear power plants.
Tanzania’s participation in the ministerial meeting is considered strategic as the country is at the early stages of preparing its nuclear power programme.
The forum provided Tanzania with an opportunity to learn and exchange experiences on advances in nuclear technology, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as well as the legal, policy, regulatory, safety and institutional frameworks required to ensure their safe and effective use.
During the meeting, Tanzania was represented by the Minister for Energy, Mr Deogratius Ndejembi.
Participants at the meeting delved into key discussions that would assist Tanzania in making proper applications of nuclear technology and adopting international best practices as the country considers the role of nuclear energy in its future electricity generation.
Other representatives during the meeting included the Deputy Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Mr Simon Songe, members of the committee, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mr Felchesmi Mramba, together with officials from the Ministry of Energy and Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO).
