Mwaka Kogwa Festival coming up in Zanzibar from July 2026

Mwaka Kogwa festival is up and running again in 2026.

Expected to excite the residents of Zanzibar between July and August, the lively events are expected to add more twist this year.

Zanzibar’s calendar usually celebrates ‘Mwaka Kogwa’, the traditional Shirazi or Persian New Year.

This festival takes place all over the island from the 23rd or 24th of July, but the main events are always staged at the Makunduchi village, in the southern parts of the main Unguja archipelago.

They are usually held in late July or early August as it will be the case for 2026 instalments.

Festival Traditions

Most traditions on this day are meant to attract good luck in the New Year.

Of course, the celebration is only complete with African folk singing, dancing, feasting, and drumming.

This festival’s unique tradition is a play fight in which the village’s men beat each other with banana sticks.

While real weapons were once utilized in past centuries, banana branch sticks are now preferred for their reduced intensity that guarantee fun and safety.

Women sing songs about family, love, and fortune during the game, dressed in their best clothes.

Main Rituals

The festival’s conclusion is marked by a significant ritual, the ceremonial burning of the ritual hut. This ritual, led by the revered mganga, a Swahili healer, is a unique aspect of the festival.

As the hut burns, predictions for the new year are drawn from the smoke’s patterns.

The fire is ignited amidst spell recitations, invoking happiness and well-being for the village in the coming year.

The festivities continue throughout the night with taarab music, dancing, drums, and the enjoyment of Swahili cuisine.

Festival Significance

The Mwaka Kogwa festival is not just a celebration, but also a traditional purification ceremony.

It provides participants with a unique platform to address past grievances and embrace the new year with a sense of harmony and renewal.

This aspect of the festival offers a cathartic experience, allowing individuals to engage in controlled and enjoyable bouts of conflict resolution.

Ultimately, it facilitates emotional renewal as they enter the new year, making it a truly transformative experience.

Zanzibar is renowned for its series of astounding festivals, including the Sauti za Busara Music Festival, the Zanzibar Film Festivals and others.
